CALMZine is a printed and digital publication released by the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) charity, which aims to prevent male suicide in the UK. Male suicide is the single biggest cause of death in men aged between 20 and 45 in England and Wales.
I have provided art direction and graphic design services for every issue of CALM Magazine since 2012, helping the magazine to win Publication of the Year at the Public Sector Communication Awards in 2013.
With so many contributors to the magazine – from guest writers, advertisers, partners, artists and other designers – deadlines are often very tight. This means working closely with the editorial team, often out of hours and working at pace to meet print and online deadlines. This publication, being positioned to appeal to young men, has a cool design aesthetic which has given me the freedom to explore new ideas and techniques in layout, typography and design. I have also commissioned and coordinated a wide range of top artists and illustrators, greatly extending my network of creative contacts.
